SAN ANTONIO - Keeping roads maintained and saving taxpayer dollars. That’s what Bexar County officials say high tech vans will be doing on the roads.

Engineer Finch Dunkin is a man on a mission. He’s making sure Bexar County roads remain in good shape.

“Motor along and have lots of room around us because we want to be able to see the images of the pavement," says Dunkin.

He adds, "The person in the office can actually see the road, see the crack, and they don't have to drive out in the county to see what's going on, on that road."

It’s called pavement data collection and county officials survey their 1,500 county-maintained roadways every three to five years. They say the new technology saves time and money.

"It's very quick and also not subjective. We're just surveying the road and the road is telling us what's going on with it," says Dunkin.

There are four cameras on the van, three up front, one in the back. It captures all different angles of the road to make sure the data they’re collecting is accurate.

Tony Vasquez, Public Works Division Chief, says this technology not only helps determine the life of the street, but allows for future budgeting for repairs.

"It's a lot better and a lot cheaper to actually maintain a street than to wait and have to reconstruct a street," says Vasquez.
