SAN ANTONIO – We’re honoring the very best from the class of 2023. When we say ‘best,’ there is a Churchill graduate who ranks as not only the best violinist in school history but also in the history of the entire Northeast School District.

Seva Joshi ranks as the number three violinist in the state. She made the all-state orchestra every year of her high school career!

Music is her life. Her outlet.

She's part of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio. And for as good as she is, she's equally as humble because she finds the joy in playing as a group, not just a solo artist.

So how does a talent like this get started? It's a story worth hearing over and over.

"I actually started when I was three years old. My mom made a violin out of a macaroni box, so I would mess around on that. We used a little wooden spoon for a bow. And then I got my first violin when I was four."

As you can imagine, it takes hours of practice every day for weeks, then years to get as good as she is with a violin. Which begs the question, does she have anything left for school?

Boy, does she!

“I'm ranked very high. I'm number four now."

Smart, Gifted, and Driven.

Seva will be attending the University of Texas this fall. Although music will always be a passion, it won't be her focus at school or as a career.

"I'm actually not studying violin. I'm studying mechanical engineering. But they have the university orchestra, so I'm definitely playing in that.

So is music a part of her professional future?

“I don't think so. It's fun and maybe I’ll continue playing in some orchestras or teach music on the side, and keep it as a serious hobby. But I don't see myself going into it as a profession.”

She also had great advice for any child pursuing a dream in music, or sports, or anything. Never look at practice as a chore, even with daily three-hour practices like she did. She says the key is having fun, and surrounding yourself with people you like. That way, it doesn't feel like you have to push.
